As the New Year unfolds, we’re reminded of fresh starts, uncharted opportunities, and promises waiting to be fulfilled. It’s also the perfect time to revisit a story of wonder and grace that reminds us to fix our eyes on the One who leads us into all things good. This week, as we anticipate January 6th—known in Uruguay and many other countries as the Día de los Reyes Magos, or Three Kings Day—let’s take a closer look at Matthew 2:1-12. The story of the Magi and their journey to worship Jesus offers timeless lessons for us as we step into a new year.
The Magi: Trailblazers with a Starry Guide
Picture this: a caravan of wise men (not kings, by the way) traversing deserts and mountains, following a star—not their GPS or Google Maps! These Magi were likely scholars or astronomers, men who noticed the extraordinary in the ordinary. A bright, unusual star caught their attention, and they interpreted it as a sign of a newborn king. Imagine explaining that to your family: “We’re off to follow a star! Don’t wait up!” Yet, their faith led them to leave behind comfort, status, and security for the adventure of seeking the Messiah.
As we begin 2025, what star is God calling you to follow? It might not be a celestial light, but perhaps it’s a nudge toward deeper faith, stronger relationships, or a bold step into a new calling. Like the Magi, we’re invited to trust the One who places the stars and lights our path. All we need is a little faith, a little courage and the right company!
A King in a Humble Setting
When the Magi arrived in Jerusalem, they expected to find a royal child in a palace. After all, that’s where kings are supposed to be, right? But Jesus, the King of kings, wasn’t in Herod’s luxurious court. He was in a modest home in Bethlehem.
Isn’t that just like God? He shows up in the unexpected, humble corners of our lives. Maybe you’ve been looking for Him in grand displays of power or dramatic answers to prayer. But often, God’s grace whispers through quiet moments, simple kindnesses, and everyday blessings. Take a moment this week to pause and reflect: Where might God be showing up in your life’s “Bethlehem” moments?
Gifts of Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh
The gifts the Magi brought were peculiar but deeply meaningful. Gold signified Jesus’ royalty, frankincense His divinity, and myrrh His future sacrifice. These weren’t your typical baby shower gifts—no diapers, no onesies—but they pointed to the ultimate purpose of Jesus’ life. As you consider the year ahead, think about the gifts you bring to Jesus. They don’t have to be elaborate or perfect. Maybe it’s the gift of your time, talents, or simply your trust. Like the Magi, offer what you have with a heart of worship. Remember, it’s not about the gift—it’s about the Giver who first loved us.
Lessons from Three Kings Day
In Uruguay and across Latin America, Día de los Reyes Magos is a celebration filled with joy, family, and traditions. Children leave their shoes out for the Magi to fill with gifts, and parades bring communities together to mark the journey of these wise men. There’s something beautiful about this tradition—a reminder that the story of Jesus is one of giving, joy, and community. Popular culture has its way of reinforcing these themes, too. Think about movies like Lord of the Rings, where a fellowship of unlikely heroes embarks on a quest much like the wise men did. These stories resonate because they echo the Gospel truth: the journey of faith is worth every step.
Stepping into the New Year
As we step into 2025, let’s take inspiration from the Magi. Their journey was guided by hope, sustained by grace, and rewarded with the joy of meeting Jesus face-to-face. This year, may your path be lit by the light of Christ. May you find Him in unexpected places and offer Him the best of who you are.
And just for fun, consider starting a “New Year’s Magi Resolution”:
Remember, friends, the same God who guided the Magi is guiding you. Whether your star looks like a clear goal or just a flicker of hope, keep walking. Grace will meet you along the way. And the view at the end is worth the effort for sure!
A Prayer for the Journey
Lord, as we enter this new year, may we be like the Magi—willing to seek, to journey, and to worship. Help us to recognize Your light in our lives and follow where You lead. May our gifts and our lives bring glory to You, and may we find joy in Your presence. Amen.
Happy New Year, and may your journey be filled with hope, grace, and a little extra sparkle in your step! Grace and peace to us all!
