Joyous Faith

How wonderful are these sunny winter days? I absolutely love them! And on those days, I also love taking long walks with my faithful companion Dora, and a common theme has been present as I use those opportunities to consider life and meditate on the season that we are on: joy and faith combining, something like joyous faith!

Let us delve into the richness of God's Word. Today, our hearts are drawn to Ephesians 3:14-21, where the apostle Paul's prayer for the Ephesian believers resonates with timeless truths about the depth of God's love and the boundless joy found in our faith. Rooted in Prayer: Paul begins his prayer with a deep sense of reverence and humility before God, saying, "For this reason I kneel before the Father" (Ephesians 3:14, NIV). This posture of kneeling signifies Paul's submission to God's sovereignty and his acknowledgment of God's authority over all things. It sets a powerful example for us as believers to approach God with humility and awe, recognizing His majesty and power. In verse 15, Paul emphasizes the familial bond we share: "from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name." Through faith in Christ, we are adopted into God's family, united as brothers and sisters in Christ. This unity transcends earthly distinctions and unites us in a spiritual family where God is our Father and Christ is our elder brother.

Strength in Inner Being: Paul's prayer continues with a petition for spiritual strength: "I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being" (Ephesians 3:16, NIV). This prayer reveals Paul's desire for the Ephesian believers (and us today) to be fortified with divine strength through the Holy Spirit. This strength is not merely physical or emotional but spiritual—deep within our innermost being where faith takes root and grows. As we navigate the challenges of life—whether personal struggles, uncertainties in the world, or spiritual battles—may we draw upon this prayer for ourselves and for one another. Let us seek God's strength in our inner being, knowing that His power is made perfect in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9).

Dwelling in Christ's Love: Paul goes on to pray that the Ephesians "may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ" (Ephesians 3:18, NIV). This is a profound plea for a deepened understanding of Christ's love—an expansive love that surpasses human comprehension. It is a love that stretches across all dimensions, encompassing the breadth of humanity and reaching into the depths of our souls.

To grasp the magnitude of Christ's love is to be rooted and established in it (Ephesians 3:17). It is to find our identity and security not in fleeting circumstances or worldly accolades but in the unchanging and boundless love of our Saviour. This love compels us to live joyously, knowing that we are deeply cherished and eternally secure in Christ.

Exceedingly Abundant: Paul concludes his prayer with a doxology, praising God who "is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us" (Ephesians 3:20, NIV). This verse encapsulates the limitless nature of God's power and His capacity to exceed our expectations. It challenges us to dream big, to pray boldly, and to trust wholeheartedly in God's ability to work miracles in our lives, in our church, and in our world.  God's plans for us are not limited by our circumstances or our capabilities. Rather, they are infused with His divine power, which transforms our ordinary lives into extraordinary testimonies of His grace and love. As we cultivate joyous faith rooted in God's love, we embrace a life marked by hope, courage, and steadfastness.

Living Out Joyous Faith: Dear friends, as we reflect on these profound words from Ephesians 3:14-21, let us consider how we can apply them to our daily lives:

  1. Prayer: Let us commit to make time before our Heavenly Father in prayer, seeking His guidance, strength, and wisdom in all circumstances.
  2. Unity: Let us embrace our identity as a unified body of believers, recognizing the richness of our spiritual inheritance as children of God.
  3. Strength: Let us draw upon the power of the Holy Spirit in our inner being, trusting in God's strength to sustain us through every challenge and trial.
  4. Love: Let us meditate on the vastness of Christ's love, allowing it to permeate our hearts and transform our relationships with others.
  5. Expectation: Let us cultivate a spirit of expectation and faith, believing that God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think.

As we journey together, may our lives be a testament to the joyous faith we have in Christ—a faith rooted in His love, sustained by His power, and overflowing with hope. May we continually grow in the knowledge of His love and experience the fullness of life that comes from Him. May we fix our eyes on Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of our faith, and may His joy fill our hearts as we live out our faith each day. Grace and peace to us all!
